What is the Latest News on Privacy?
For Cyber Dad, a better question is “What is the best news source on privacy?” That answer is more likely to get you informed and keep you informed. I am an enthusiastic fan, as my readers know, of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). For $295 a year, you get daily/weekly/monthly updates. I have been a member for years.
That said, while there is an ongoing U.S. federal/state controversy on artificial intelligence regulation since the December 2025 Executive Order, the news privacy laws in general continue to expand in the United States. IAPP also publishes (free!) a state law tracker (updated 12 Jan 2026) at:
They list 19 states with privacy laws, with another 13 states working on said laws. Every year, a little more. Three states’ laws went active 1 Jan 2026: Indiana, Kentucky, and Rhode Island.
Additionally:
#1 An impressive 14 Jan 2026 article from The National Law Review on electronic workplace monitoring of employees: https://natlawreview.com/article/electronic-workplace-monitoring-privacy-compliance-and-risk-management#:~:text=Electronic%20workplace%20monitoring%20can%20be,be%20implemented%20thoughtfully%20and%20lawfully.
#2 Interesting article 8 January 2026 on automated license plate readers from Stateline. This is tied to state government action regarding ICE using license plate data: https://stateline.org/2026/01/08/worried-about-surveillance-states-enact-privacy-laws-and-restrict-license-plate-readers/
#3 Finally, and again from The National Law Review, https://natlawreview.com/article/there-privacy-after-death-estate-plannings-critical-role-and-need-act-now This one was important for me, as I want my heirs to have as easy a time as possible settling my affairs. Normally, and I hold five privacy certifications, privacy ends at death. Not so fast! If you don’t set things up properly, your heirs can have all kinds of trouble.
